Red Headed Cardinal Beetle

The Red Headed Cardinal Beetle (Pyrochroa serraticornis) is a common beetle that likes to live in woodlands, hedgerows and gardens. They feed on other insects as do their larvae, feeding on the larvae of other insects.

You can see a photograph of a Red Headed Cardinal Beetle taken on Bradgers Hill to the left.

Bright orange to red in colour with black legs and toothed antennae, they grow to about 2 cm in length and can often be found under loose bark. The adults emerge around May time and disperse as the weather gets warmer and can be seen basking on large leaves.

If your see one, take a photo and submit it to us for use on this website. We’d love to see your submission.
